Bubbledogs
As a general rule of life, I don't do birthdays. My own, that is, I'm a BIG fan of other people's birthdays! An excuse to dress up and drink up without being the centre of attention. But my own? Simply not interested. Maybe it is because living down south means I am far away from my family, maybe it is because (apart from every 6th and 7th year when the date falls on a weekend) I generally have to spend my whole day in an office glued to my PC screens. Maybe it's because I'm too excited about Christmas to care about anything else.. Or maybe (and most probably!) it's because I don't like the thought of having to be a proper grown up, and I'm scared of wanting to celebrate a birthday and it not being as exciting as it used to be. I am a classic case of a girl in denial!
So, for a decidedly non-birthday dinner date (that MM had insisted we go out for), I had scoured my internet resources to find somewhere quirky, different, low-key but special. The results seemed to bear very few fruit, with one increasingly apparent common denominator... Bubbledogs. Hot dogs and champagne; an absolutely dream combination!
After a very fun hour of iceskating at EyeSkate @ London Eye, and a not so fun half hour of travelling on the tube with a soaking wet bum (thanks to a sodden bench that I sat on to take off my skates!) we arrived at Goodge St station and scouted out our venue.
The outside is pretty cool.. No frills and tassels- just a red neon light spelling out Bubbledogs.
Then we went inside* (*by this I mean we queued for an hour in the open doorway to get inside.) It was a standard Thursday night, and a friend who had been before has since told me she also had to wait for an hour on a Tuesday evening- so it does seem to be the norm.
Bubbledogs operate a 'no reservations for tables less than 6 people' policy- which I can, kind of, understand. The interior is very small and if people don't show up for their tables, then a significant amount of business would be lost.
However, what I don't understand, is why, in the midst of a very freezing December, the gentleman manning the door and waiting list could not take our names and mobile numbers and let us pop to the pub to warm up and have a drink whilst we were waiting for our table.
Our only options were to find somewhere else to eat, or wait. In the cold. With a wet bum.
Naturally, I chose to wait!! (...and have a markedly unimpressed boyfriend)
The promise of hot dogs and champagne after 40 minutes, paired with intrigue about the hype this place was getting online, was too much! Plus, I am very stubborn and don't like to change plans last minute.
After the 40 minutes were up, I couldn't face defeat- so we waited the extra 20 until our table for 2 (seated at the bar) was ready.
The interior is very nice- exposed brickwork, little fairy lights strung around, wooden benches and tables- not at all fast-foody, but also not uncomfortably stuffy and posh. Perfect for the occasion really.
We ordered champagne (of course) and viewed the menu. There are about 10 'dogs' to choose from so the options aren't vast, and then you can order additional sides.
After a period of very serious deliberation- I decided to order the Breakfast Dog (hot dog with tomato relish, black pudding bits, and a fried egg) and MM chose the Nacho Cheese dog (peppers, onions and cheese) and we shared Tater Tots (classic) and some coleslaw.
The photos aren't great, I know! But a) I was SO hungry I couldn't really be bothered to concentrate on my photographer skillz, and b) I had no intention to put them on a blog at this point!
They are really good hot dogs, albeit a little pricey for what you get. MM's was nicer than mine, but that's partly to do with the fact that mine was harder to eat.. Trying to consume a fried egg balanced on top of a sausage in a bun in a ladylike way is not an easy task!
The selection of champagnes is impressive- and you can order by both the bottle or the glass, so you can chop and change to your heart's content.
But, was it worth it? If it wasn't for the massive queue, I would say yes... On occasion. The novelty factor is great- champagne and hot dogs do make for a very cool and alternative dinner date. What did put me off though was the monster queue, and the hot dogs aren't as special as you might hope.
It is worth a visit... But take if I go again it will be to a pre-booked table with 5 friends.
